get outside. seek & find god.
PART ONE: LECTURES
Prepare to grow in intimacy with God through worship, intercession and lectures in conjunction with the rest of the training school, with a twist of adventure on your allocated elective days and weekends.
Look forward to hiking, camping, and swimming in some of the best places in Northland, New Zealand. Whether on a stunning hike or snorkelling in a marine reserve, we want to help our students connect with God in various ways.

PART TWO: OUTREACH
Ultimately, we seek to be disciples who are always ready and willing to serve and share the good news of Jesus Christ. Expect to put what you learn in the classroom into practice as you travel abroad for your cross-cultural outreach, encountering God in new places and making him known in the nations.
This portion of the DTS is set over the course of 8 to 10 weeks and is a required part of the UofN DTS curriculum. Students are prayerfully placed into teams with staff facilitation and commissioned to our partnering locations.

“Suddenly I was looking at a map of the world, only the map was alive and moving! I could see all the continents, and waves were crashing onto their shores. Each wave went onto a continent, then receded, then came up further until it covered the continent completely. The waves become young people – kids my age and even younger – covering all the continents of the globe...

...They were talking to people on street corners and outside bars. They were going from house to house and preaching the Gospel. They came from everywhere and went everywhere, caring for people. Then just as suddenly as it had come the scene was gone.” - Loren Cunningham (YWAM founder)
What activities can i expect to do?
Outdoor Pursuits does a wide range of activities* around Northland, allowing our students to connect with God in a completely different way than they would in the classroom.
Our usual activities:
- Plenty of beautiful walks around the headlands with panoramic ocean views
- Snorkeling at poor-knights island
- Glow-worm caves
- Paintball
- Bowling and laser tag for a rainy day or evening fun
- Inflatable water-park
- Swimming and rock-jumping at nearby waterfalls
There is also plenty of opportunity for students during and after the school to explore further and try their hand at activities not organized by us. These have included: Skydiving, hiking further down the island, Hobbiton,
*All activities are assessed for risk and facilitated by trained guides where appropriate. Our love for the outdoors means we also are keenly aware of the risks involved in various activities, so we are very careful about what we do and do not do during schools.

what should i pack for this elective specifically?
Because of our proximity to the ocean and marine reserves, we've had students bring their own snorkeling and diving gear. Be sure to have very comfortable walking shoes/sandals and breathable fabrics for those extra-hot days. Sunblock is a MUST as New Zealand's ozone isn't holding up and the chances of sunburn are high regardless of what sun exposure you are used to.
Upon acceptance, students receive a packing list at the back of their booklet which covers the necessities for your time with us, as well as makes a few suggestions on additional but not essential items some attendees find helpful.
